EV road trips to Etna, California, with free charging

Five starting points, the best fast chargers on each route, and three nights at Blossom with free EV charging. Nobody drives more than about four hours in a day.

Picture the last hour of the drive. The freeway is behind you, the road climbs out of Yreka, and Scott Valley opens up with the Marble Mountains on the far side. You pull in at Blossom after 3 PM, plug the car in by the house and leave it there for three nights. EV charging is free with every stay at Blossom, from a 240-volt dryer-style outlet that works like a Level 2 charger and tops up most cars overnight. Bring your own mobile charging cable with a dryer-outlet adapter, and text our concierge at 530 572 1122 to confirm the plug type before you pack.

Below are five road trips, from Ashland, Medford, Redding, San Francisco and the wider Bay Area. For each one we picked the chargers that are fastest, best placed on the route, and set up with restrooms and food nearby. While you plan, see what's on around Etna on our events calendar.

What a stay at Blossom costs

These are founding rates for Sovereign Circle members, free to join through December 31, 2026. Every stay includes cleaning and every fee, and the longer you stay, the more you save. Prices below are for winter dates, November through February, before the 14% county lodging tax.

  • 2 nights: $783, or $892.62 with tax. About $223 each for four adults.

  • 3 nights: $1,090, or $1,242.60 with tax. About $311 each for four adults.

  • A week: $2,000, or $2,280 with tax. About $570 each for four adults.

Two nights save 25% on the nightly rate, three nights save 27.5%, and a full week is a flat $2,000. The house is made for up to four adults or a family of up to six, and the living room couch makes a comfortable extra bed.

From Ashland

The drive: about 75 miles and an hour and a half, south on I-5 over Siskiyou Summit to Yreka, then Highway 3 into Scott Valley. One easy day.

  • Charge before you leave: the IONNA Rechargery at 461 S Valley View Road has eight chargers at up to 400 kW for both CCS and Tesla plugs, with restrooms and drinks on site, close to the I-5 on-ramp. Tesla drivers can also use the 24-stall Ashland Supercharger.

  • On the way: you likely won't need a stop. If you do, Yreka is 35 minutes from the house (see "Charging near Etna" below).

  • At Blossom: plug in for three nights of free charging and leave the car parked.

From Medford

The drive: about 90 miles and an hour and 50 minutes by way of I-5, Siskiyou Summit and Yreka. One easy day.

  • Charge before you leave: Electrify America at Fred Meyer has six chargers at up to 350 kW, with the grocery store for restrooms and road snacks. Tesla drivers have the 12-stall, 325 kW Medford Supercharger.

  • Eat: Rooted: Eat More Plants in Medford, plant-based by its own name, for lunch before you go. Check hours before you go.

  • At Blossom: plug in for three nights of free charging.

From Redding

The drive: about 135 miles and two hours and 10 minutes, north on I-5 past Mount Shasta to Yreka, then into Scott Valley. One easy day. From May to October you can take the scenic Highway 3 route over Scott Mountain instead, but it has no fast chargers for about 150 miles, so non-Tesla drivers should leave Redding full.

From San Francisco

The drive: about 290 miles, so we split it to keep every day under four hours. Day 1, San Francisco to Redding by I-80, I-505 and I-5 (about 3 hours 30 minutes). Day 2, Redding to Etna (about 2 hours 10 minutes), arriving for check-in. Three nights at Blossom. On the way home, stop again in Redding, or drive straight through if you are comfortable with about five hours.

From the Bay Area: Oakland, San Jose and Marin

The drive: the same plan as San Francisco, with one night in Redding each way. From Oakland, take I-80 to Vacaville (about 3 hours 20 minutes to Redding). From San Jose, take I-680 north to I-80 (about 3 hours 50 minutes to Redding). From Marin, take Highway 37 to I-80 (about 3 hours 30 minutes to Redding).

  • Chargers: the same three stops as from San Francisco: Vacaville (Tesla, 28 stalls), Corning BP Pulse (all cars, 400 kW) and Redding. From San Jose, leave home full, since the first fast stop on this route is Vacaville.

  • Overnight in Redding: The Desmond House, then on to Etna the next morning with lunch in Mount Shasta.

  • At Blossom: three nights of free charging.

Charging near Etna

There is no fast charger in Etna, Fort Jones or Greenview, so most guests never need one: arrive with enough charge to reach the house, then plug in at Blossom for free. If you want a fast top-up, Yreka is 35 minutes away, on Fort Jones Road, the road into the valley:

Your three nights at Blossom

  • Night 1, arrive and settle. Check in at 3 PM and plug in. Walk to Main Street in Etna, then cook dinner in the kitchen and eat at the round table by the wood stove.

  • Day 2, mountain air. From summer to fall, drive about 12 miles up to Etna Summit and walk an easy stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail. In winter, walk the valley floor, roll out a yoga mat in the second bedroom and read by the stove. After dark, step outside for the stars.

  • Day 3, a slow day out. Drive to Mount Shasta (about 1 hour 10 minutes each way) for a class at Shasta Yoga Institute (confirm the schedule), lunch at Alua's Thrive Bar and a quiet sit at Headwaters Spring. Be home before dark, with the car back on the charger.

  • Day 4, an easy morning. A long breakfast, a last walk under the oaks, and checkout at 11 AM with a full battery.

Winter driving

Siskiyou Summit on I-5 usually sees snow from November through April. Drive in daylight, stay together if you travel in two cars, check Caltrans QuickMap before every leg, and carry chains or traction devices. Cold weather cuts range by 20 to 30 percent, so arrive with a buffer. Save our guide to car trouble near Etna for towing, mechanics and chains.
