Etna is a small mountain town of about 700 people on the western edge of Scott Valley, and the list of places to stay is short. That is part of its charm. Here is what to know before you book, and what a stay at Blossom Sanctuary looks like.
What to know before you book
Book early for summer and fall weekends. Places fill up around hiking season, fall color and holidays.
Think about your group. Many places in and around town are single rooms or small cabins. If you are a family or a few friends traveling together, a whole house means one kitchen, one table and no hallway goodbyes.
Stay within walking distance of Main Street. There is no taxi or ride service in the valley, so a place you can walk home from, after dinner at Denny Bar Co. or a pint at Etna Brewing Co., is worth a lot.
Give yourself more than one night. The lakes, the drives and the quiet take time to sink in. Most of the valley's best things happen on day two.
Blossom Sanctuary
Blossom Sanctuary is a private three-bedroom house for up to six guests on 4.2 acres of oaks, pines and gardens just outside Etna. The whole house is yours. Nobody else is staying on the land, and we are there only if you ask.
The house. Restored vintage furniture beside newer comforts, a wood stove for cold nights, a full kitchen set for a real dinner, and beds our guests keep mentioning in their reviews.
The land. Old oaks left standing, a flowing bird bath built from stacked stones, terraced gardens you can harvest from in summer and fall, and deer passing through every day.
The town. A walk of about 10 to 15 minutes down an oak-canopied driveway to coffee, bread and dinner on Main Street.
The mountains. Alpine lakes and the Pacific Crest Trail are up the road, and cold creek pools sit about 11 minutes up the mountain.
