Fish the Klamath with Wyatt Finley of Fins Guide Service

There's a moment on the Klamath, right before the light hits the water, when the whole canyon goes quiet and the rod tip starts to pulse. After three closed years, that moment is back. Fall Chinook reopened on the Klamath in 2026, steelhead follow them into winter, and Scott Valley sits right above the river as the place to sleep, eat and tell the story afterward.

And when guys ask me who to fish it with, I give them one name: Wyatt Finley of Fins Guide Service. Message him on Instagram, tell him your dates, and he'll handle the river. Here's who he is, how to book him, and everything else you need for a Klamath trip from Etna.

Meet your guide: Wyatt Finley, Fins Guide Service

You can fish the Klamath on your own. You'll catch more, learn more and have a better time with someone who fishes it for a living.

Wyatt Finley runs Fins Guide Service across Southern Oregon, Northern California and Alaska. He's fully licensed and insured, a USCG-certified captain, and he fishes salmon and steelhead on the rivers and runs ocean charters on the coast. I'll say it plainly: he knows how to give the guys the weekend they came for.

How to book:

  1. Follow @finsguideservice and @wyattfinley on Instagram to see what's biting.

  2. Send Wyatt a message with your dates, how many are in your party, and whether you want river or ocean.

  3. Lock in your days, then book your stay in Scott Valley.

Book early. Good guides fill their calendars first, especially in the heart of the fall run.

Why fish the Klamath

The Klamath runs from the Oregon high desert to the Pacific, cutting through some of the most rugged country in California. It's one of the great salmon and steelhead rivers of the West Coast, and with the old dams gone and the fall Chinook season open again, it's the river everybody is talking about.

What you get here that you don't get on a crowded coastal river: canyon walls, wildlife on the banks, eagles and osprey working the same water you are, and long stretches where yours is the only boat in sight.

Fall Chinook: the 2026 season

  • Season: August 15 to December 31, from the I-5 bridge to the mouth.

  • Limits: 2 Chinook a day, only 1 of them an adult over 23 inches, and 6 in possession.

  • Quota: the basin quota is 3,248 adults, so the season can close early. Call the Klamath quota hotline at (800) 564-6479 before you go.

  • Gear rules: barbless hooks.

November and December are prime time for late fish. Water is cold, the crowds are gone, and the fish are still coming.

Steelhead: the winter run

When the salmon thin out, steelhead take over. From November through March, by one outfitter's account, "it's game on" on the lower river. Winter steelhead fishing is about reading water and covering it, which is exactly why a guide earns his fee: he knows where they hold when the river rises and drops.

Licenses and rules

  • Everyone fishing needs a California fishing license, plus a steelhead report card and a Klamath salmon report card.

  • Hooks must be barbless.

  • Leave the Scott River alone in town. It's closed through most of Scott Valley and open only below the Fort Jones to Greenview bridge from the fourth Saturday in May to February 28.

  • Check current regulations at wildlife.ca.gov before every trip. Seasons and quotas can change during the year.

Fishing in Oregon too? Your guide will tell you what you need for each side of the border.

What to bring

  • Your California fishing license and report cards, on your phone and on paper.

  • Layers: a warm base layer, fleece, and a real rain shell. Mornings on the river are cold from October on.

  • Waterproof boots, a warm hat and gloves you can still tie knots in.

  • Polarized sunglasses.

  • A cooler and ice for the drive home, if you plan to keep fish.

  • Snacks and water. Ask your guide what he provides.

Where to stay: Scott Valley

After a cold day on the water, you want a hot meal, a fire and a real bed. Blossom Sanctuary is a private retreat house just outside Etna, made for up to four adults or a family of up to six: a wood stove, a kitchen for cooking your catch, coffee ready in the morning and a fire pit for the stories.

In town, Etna Brewing Co. pours an award-winning porter, and Denny Bar Co. has a burger made with Scott Valley beef and its own whiskey. For the full four-day plan, read our men's retreat in Scott Valley.

A season note: the mountain roads are for daylight. Drive to the river and home before dark, travel together, and check Caltrans QuickMap for chain controls and closures.
