A men's retreat in Scott Valley

Woodsmoke, a cold river at dawn, and a few old friends with nowhere else to be. This is our four-day plan for a men's retreat in Scott Valley, made for two to four and timed to when the valley's kitchens and taps are open: Thursday to Sunday.

Why Scott Valley

Life gets loud. Scott Valley is where it goes quiet. Leave the inbox, the traffic and the noise on the other side of the mountains, and give a few days to the things that matter: yourself, your friends, and nothing to prove.

If you live on the West Coast and haven't found this corner of California yet, it's one every man should see. Salmon in the Klamath, deer and elk at the edges of the fields, ranch beef and local whiskey, a small-town night out in Etna, and the rugged wonder of Siskiyou County in every direction. It's paradise for men who love nature, wildlife, food, drinks and a good time.

This retreat is for every man who loves the outdoors and also loves intentional comfort: a real bed after a cold day on the river, coffee ready in the morning, and nights around the fire pit that last as long as the stories do.

The house

Blossom Sanctuary, just outside Etna, is at its best for up to four adults or a family of up to six: a California King under vaulted ceilings, a Queen in the second bedroom (where the yoga mats and kettlebells live), and a full bed up a ladder in the loft, "only accessible to the adventurous." The kitchen is set for a long dinner, coffee and tea are included, and a private chef can be arranged for an added fee. After dark there's the wood stove, the cloud couch, the fire pit, and a garden made for staying out under the stars. Call it the era of presence: phones face down, and the long talks finally get their turn.

Train while you're here

Keep your routine, or start a new one. Every option is a few minutes from the house:

  • Chai Trains: yoga and training with Chai Perlman. Check the schedule and book a session online.

  • Rough and Ready Fitness: weights and cardio in Etna, open 24/7 with door codes, $10 drop-in.

  • Kreate Yoga: the concierge can arrange a private session at the house.

  • At the house: kettlebells and yoga mats in the second bedroom, and the whole garden for a morning workout.

  • Recovery: ask the concierge about Mari Kraus Massage and Wellness, or save it all for the cold plunge at Chozu on day four.

Day 1, Thursday: arrive and loosen up

Afternoon. Flying in? Medford (MFR) is about 1.5 hours away. Shake off the drive at Rough and Ready Fitness in Etna: weights and cardio, open 24/7 with door codes, $10 drop-in.

Evening. Walk to Etna Brewing Co. for the Mexi-burger and an award-winning porter (open until 8 pm).

Night. Then see Etna's night scene: small, friendly and walkable. Stop for a nightcap at Denny Bar Co., walk Main Street under more stars than streetlights, and head home to the fire pit.

Day 2, Friday: the Klamath

After three closed years, Klamath fall Chinook reopened in 2026: Aug 15 to Dec 31, from the I-5 bridge to the mouth. The limit is 2 a day (only 1 adult over 23 inches) and 6 in possession, under a basin quota of 3,248 adults, so call the quota hotline at (800) 564-6479 before you go. Everyone fishing needs a California fishing license plus steelhead and Klamath salmon report cards, and hooks must be barbless.

Hire a guide (our Klamath fishing guide has seasons, limits and what to bring). Fins Guide Service is run by Wyatt Finley, a licensed, insured, USCG-certified captain who fishes salmon and steelhead on the rivers and runs ocean charters across Southern Oregon and Northern California. He knows how to give the guys the weekend they came for; message him on Instagram to book your days. Or try Jack Trout, based in Mount Shasta, who prices Klamath drift boat days for one or two anglers, so four of you means two boats. Book early, and confirm this season's dates and where to meet. On the lower river, by the outfitter's account, steelhead and salmon show up in August, and from November through March "it's game on."

Back in the valley, leave the rods in the truck: the Scott River is closed through most of Scott Valley, open only below the Fort Jones to Greenview bridge from the fourth Saturday in May to Feb 28.

Evening. A private chef at the house, or dinner at Denny Bar Co., a walk away. Order the burger: the beef comes from Jenner Family Beef, a Scott Valley ranching family.

Day 3, Saturday: summit or fairway, then rib-eye

Morning. While the road is clear, drive about 10 miles up Sawyers Bar Road to Etna Summit, near 6,000 feet, where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses between the Marble Mountains and the Russian Wilderness. This time of year it's a drive, not a hike: go in daylight, go together, enjoy the view from the pullout, and check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave. Road snowed in? Lake Shastina Golf Resort in Weed, about an hour away, has 27 holes by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr.

Winter dusk on the ridges above Scott Valley. Go up in daylight and be back down before this light.

Afternoon. The free Denny Bar Co. distillery tour and tasting, with its own vodka, gin and whiskey. Tours run Friday to Sunday and take 20 to 25 minutes; call (530) 467-5115 to book. The tasting is for guests 21 and over. Name the sober driver before the first pour.

Evening. Rib-eye night at the Callahan Emporium, 12.7 miles south on Highway 3 (Friday and Saturday nights). It may close at 7, so call (530) 467-3395 and go early. I'll say it plainly: every one of the most unmemorable memorable nights ends at the Callahan Emporium. Then home, and out to the garden for the stars.

Day 4, Sunday: sweat it out in Ashland

Drive about 68 miles (1 hour 15 to 20 minutes) through Yreka and over Siskiyou Summit, the highest point on I-5, to Chozu Bath & Tea Gardens, 832 A St: a Japanese-style bathhouse with sauna, cold plunge, steam, hot pools, massage, and a tea and sake lounge (Sunday 10 am to 9 pm). Go hot, then cold, until somebody admits this was a good idea. My pick for after: The Noble Fox, a restaurant and brewery at 101 Oak St with its own beers, craft cocktails and whiskeys. Flying out of Medford? Ashland is on the way.

Plan by season

  • October to March: guide season on the Klamath, with Chinook through Dec 31 this year and steelhead after. Snow closes the high country, so lean on Chozu and the stove.

  • April to October: rafting. Momentum River Expeditions runs Klamath day trips all season. Tributary Whitewater Tours runs the Class IV Upper Klamath June to August, and a three-day Lower Klamath trip from Happy Camp May to July.

  • Summer: come back for the high country. The Marble Mountain Wilderness trails from Etna Summit, Lovers Camp and Kelsey lead toward lakes like Paynes, Paradise, Wright and Sky High. Go with a local guide or someone who knows the trails, and carry a California Campfire Permit for any stove.

Good to know

  • Check current CDFW regulations at wildlife.ca.gov before you fish.

  • Denny Bar closes Monday and Tuesday, Etna Brewing Tuesday and Wednesday, the Callahan Emporium and Chozu on Monday. Check hours before you go.

  • Scott Valley has no taxis or ride-shares. Your sober driver covers the tasting and the Callahan run.

  • Ashland adds 5% to restaurant meals. Heading back south, the California border station at Hornbrook asks about fruit, plants and firewood.

  • Fall is hunting season in the mountains: wear something bright on the trail.

  • In winter, Siskiyou Summit may require chains or traction tires. Check tripcheck.com and Caltrans QuickMap.

See open dates and prices for your stay at Blossom Sanctuary. Through December 31, joining the Sovereign Circle is free, with member rates and instant booking from the members calendar.
