The Scott Valley food tour: every place to eat in one day, ranked by you

At eight on a Friday morning, Etna is quiet, the air still holds the night's chill, and the only plan that matters is breakfast. Then lunch. Then a second lunch. This is every place to eat in Scott Valley in one day: nine stops across Etna, Fort Jones and Callahan, with plates passed around so a group makes it to dinner. We'll give you the route and what to share. The ranking is yours.

How the day works

Go on a Friday. Everything with posted hours is open Thursday to Saturday, and Friday is the day Dave's Place makes its clam chowder.

Share everything. One order per stop, cut into pieces, with extra forks.

Choose a sober driver. The day covers about 50 miles of Highway 3, a little over an hour behind the wheel, and there's no taxi or ride-share in Scott Valley. The driver drinks no alcohol until the car is parked at the house after Callahan. The last three stops are a walk away.

Morning in Etna

8 am. Farmhouse Bakery, 445 Main St. Breads, pastries, cakes and sandwiches, all made from scratch. Choose two pastries and quarter them; it's a long day. Hours aren't posted online, so call (530) 467-3003 the day before.

8:45 am. Wildwood Coffee, Main St. Espresso, flavored coffee or chai all round, and one sausage breakfast croissant, split.

Fort Jones: three stops in one small town

Drive 12 to 13 miles north on Highway 3, about 15 minutes.

9:45 am. Trading Post Cafe & Mercantile, 11806 Main St. A second coffee, made with locally roasted espresso, and one scoop of ice cream with a spoon for everyone.

11 am. Dave's Place, 11331 Mathews St. Burgers, pizza and sandwiches, and on Fridays, handmade clam chowder. One bowl, passed around, is why this tour runs on a Friday.

Noon. Five Marys Burgerhouse, 11825 Main St. The beef comes from the family's own ranch. Share a Bacon Bourbon Burger, quartered, with the hand-cut fries in the middle.

Callahan: the far end of the day

Head about 25 miles south on Highway 3, roughly 30 minutes, back through Etna.

1:30 pm. The Callahan Emporium, 12511 Highway 3. A historic bar, deli and general store that was once the Baker Hotel and reopened in 2011, with a wall of dollar bills. Share a tri-tip sub and the family-recipe potato salad. Craft beer and cider are on tap for anyone not driving. Rib-eye nights (Friday and Saturday) are a story for another evening.

The long finish in Etna

Drive 12.7 miles back to Etna, 15 to 20 minutes.

Park at the house and leave the car there for the night. Everything from here is on foot.

3:30 pm. Sugar Magnolia's Farmstand & Bakery, 306 Callahan St. A weekend farmstand and bakery, open Friday to Sunday, with artisan sourdough, homemade breads, sweet treats and farm-fresh produce. Split one sweet thing now and buy a loaf for tomorrow's breakfast.

5 pm. Etna Brewing Co., 131 Callahan St. You're on foot now, and the driver is off duty. Order the mac and cheese for the table, then choose between the award-winning porter and the house root beer. The taproom closes at 8.

6:30 pm. Denny Bar Co., 511 Main St. Dinner at the distillery. Share wood-fired pizzas, the Asado and the bacon dill pickle, and order a cocktail made with its own vodka, gin or whiskey. Burger people: Denny Bar's beef comes from Jenner Family Beef, a fifth-generation Scott Valley ranch, so you're eating the valley you drove through all day. Book ahead on Tock.

After dinner. The walk home. Main Street goes quiet, the mountains go dark against the sky, and the stars come out over the walled garden. It's the one stop we'll rank for you: first, every time.

Two more for your list

Patitos. Etna's taco truck has no website, so ask in town where it's parked. Tacos in the garden make a fine tenth stop, or tomorrow's lunch.

Little Whisk Baking Co. The baker behind it works to custom order, so order ahead through her Instagram. She's known for her macarons, but her sourdough, made mainly for friends and family, is the secret that bread lovers will die for. My full review is four words long: She. Makes. Good. Bread.

Then tell us your top three: text 530 572 1122 or write to Concierge@blossomsanctuary.com. We keep our own list to ourselves, and we'd love to read yours. Food trucks and pop-ups come and go, so tell us if we've missed one.

Good to know

  • Many places close early in the week, so Friday lines up best. Denny Bar Co. is closed Monday and Tuesday, Etna Brewing Co. Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Callahan Emporium Monday. Sugar Magnolia's opens Friday to Sunday only.

  • Hours change with the seasons, and Farmhouse Bakery, Wildwood Coffee, Trading Post and Dave's Place don't post theirs online, so the morning times above are a plan, not a promise. Call ahead the day before.

  • Bring a warm layer for the walk home.

Stay a short walk from the last two stops: see open dates and prices for your stay at Blossom Sanctuary, just outside Etna, where the house sleeps up to four adults or a family of up to six, and the couch makes a comfortable extra bed. Join the Sovereign Circle free through December 31, 2026 for the member rate and a gift with your first stay. Planning for a group? Text the concierge at 530 572 1122 or write to Concierge@blossomsanctuary.com.
