The 10 best airports for a Blossom retreat, all nonstop to Medford in under 3 hours
There is a moment, somewhere over the Siskiyou Mountains, when the city finally lets go of your shoulders. The window fills with ridgelines and dark pine, the seatbelt sign chimes, and you land in a small, calm airport with no trams and no sprint between terminals. Ninety minutes later you are in a garden in Etna with the kettle on. Here are the ten airports that fly straight to Medford, and how to turn the trip into the reset you have been promising yourself all year.
Why Medford is the easy way in
Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR) is the closest major airport to Blossom Sanctuary: about 83 miles, roughly an hour and a half by car. It is a one-terminal airport with around 56 arrivals and departures a day, so landing feels more like arriving at a lodge than a hub. Bags come out at the north end of the terminal. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz and National all rent cars at the airport, Uber and Lyft pick up there, and the locally owned Sky House Bar & Grill pours a proper drink upstairs if your flight home runs late. Driving electric? EV charging is included at the house, so you can leave full.
The ten airports, and the best wellness in each
Every one of these is a nonstop to Medford, and every one is under three hours in the air. Schedules change, so check the airline before you book. While you plan, here is where each city goes to unwind, so you can start the reset before you even leave home.
Seattle (SEA): about 1 hour 30 minutes
Alaska and Delta fly the route several times a day. Before you go: Banya 5 in South Lake Union for hydrotherapy pools, eucalyptus steam and sauna, or Wild Haus, a wood-fired floating sauna that cruises Lake Union.
Portland (PDX): about 1 hour
Alaska flies it about four times a day, the shortest hop on the list. Before you go: CASCADA Thermal Springs on Alberta Street, an underground spa with warm pools, a marble steam room and a cold plunge, or the Finnish-style steam at Löyly.
San Francisco (SFO): about 1 hour 30 to 45 minutes
United flies two or three times a day. Before you go: Kabuki Springs & Spa in Japantown, the city's quiet, communal bathhouse since 1968, or Archimedes Banya in Bayview, with Russian saunas, a hammam and a rooftop view of the bay.
Los Angeles (LAX): about 2 hours
Alaska flies once or twice a day. Before you go: Remedy Place in West Hollywood for guided ice baths, sauna suites and breathwork, or the 24-hour Korean bathhouse culture at Wi Spa in Koreatown.
San Diego (SAN): about 2 hours 10 minutes
Alaska flies daily. Before you go: Fairmont Spa & Wellness at the Grand Del Mar, with canyon views and a sound-therapy suite, or the free clifftop Meditation Gardens above Swami's in Encinitas.
Orange County (SNA): about 2 hours
Allegiant flies about twice a week, so plan around its days. Before you go: The Spa at Pelican Hill on Newport Coast, or Wren, a neighborhood wellness club in Costa Mesa with garden massage, sauna and cold plunge.
Las Vegas (LAS): about 1 hour 45 minutes
Allegiant flies several times a week. Before you go: Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace and its Arctic Ice Room, or the thermal circuit at Awana Spa at Resorts World.
Salt Lake City (SLC): about 2 hours
Delta flies twice a day. Before you go: Glow SLC, a bathhouse with sauna, steam, cold plunge, yoga and massage, or The Grand Spa at the Grand America Hotel.
Denver (DEN): about 2 hours 30 to 50 minutes
United flies twice a day. Before you go: RÖK Spas near Union Station, a Nordic bathhouse with guided aufguss and four cold plunges, or contrast therapy at PORTAL Thermaculture in LoHi.
Phoenix (PHX): about 2 hours 30 to 45 minutes
American flies once or twice a day. Before you go: the hammam-inspired Joya Spa in Paradise Valley, or Sanctuary Spa on Camelback Mountain, with its Zen meditation garden.
Land, eat in Ashland, cross the summit
Ashland is about 25 minutes south of the airport on I-5, and it is the best first stop of the trip. Book a heated class at Ashland Hot Yoga, walk Lithia Park, and sit down to dinner. My picks are Cocorico, with a menu that changes daily, and The Noble Fox downtown. Our wellness day in Ashland has the full plan, including this season's Festival of Light.
Then the best part. South of Ashland, I-5 climbs to Siskiyou Summit, 4,310 feet, the highest point on the whole interstate. Cross into California, follow the road through Yreka, and take Highway 3 south through Fort Jones into Scott Valley. The ranches open up, the peaks close in around you, and Etna appears at the end of the road. Pull in, and the whole cottage is yours.
The undercover cheat code for this fall
Big wellness resorts are wonderful, and also full. You share the pools, the dining room, the schedule. An intimate retreat works differently. At Blossom Sanctuary there is no front desk and no crowd: just 4.2 acres of gardens, three bedrooms for up to six, terraced gardens for morning yoga, outdoor meditation spaces, hammocks under the oaks and a wood stove for cold nights. You set the pace. Sleep with blackout curtains, cook in a kitchen set for a dinner party, walk to Main Street for bread, and stay out for the stars.
That is the cheat code: the restorative parts of a destination spa, without the destination spa. Fall is the sweet spot, with cool mornings, gold oaks and empty trails. Pair it with a day on the mountain from our Mount Shasta guide and you have built yourself a retreat no one else is on.
Good to know
Medford to Etna is about 83 miles, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes: I-5 south over Siskiyou Summit, then through Yreka and south on Highway 3 through Fort Jones.
From November through April the summit can require chains or traction tires. Check TripCheck on the Oregon side and Caltrans QuickMap in California before you drive.
The airport suggests arriving 2 hours before your flight home. Parking runs $18 to $23 a day.
Allegiant's Las Vegas and Orange County flights run only a few days a week, so book the flight first and the stay around it.
Drinking in Ashland? Plan a sober designated driver. It's a mountain drive, and there's no taxi or ride-share in Scott Valley.
