One perfect wellness day in Ashland, Oregon, this fall and winter
Ashland in the cool months smells like wet leaves and woodsmoke, and the light comes in low and gold through the sycamores of Lithia Park. The summer crowds have gone home. The town slows down, and that is exactly when it is best for the body. Here is our favorite way to spend one long, restorative day there this fall and winter, and why it makes the perfect pause on a drive up or down the West Coast.
Morning: heat, then coffee
Ashland Hot Yoga, 2455 Siskiyou Blvd. This is my hot yoga studio whenever I'm in Ashland: heated classes for every level in a 100-year-old building, booked through the Mindbody app. Take the earliest class you can. You walk out warm, loose and quiet in the head, which is the whole point of the day.
Noble Coffee Roasting. Organic coffee roasted in house, and a good table to sit at while your heart rate comes back down. Ask about plant milks.
Late morning: Lithia Park and the water
Walk from the Plaza straight into Lithia Park: 93 acres along Ashland Creek with about 6 miles of trails, two duck ponds and a Japanese Garden. In late October and November the maples and sycamores turn yellow, red and plum, and a 3 mile loop from the Plaza is the easiest way to see it all.
The park is named for Ashland's mineral springs. Near the entrance, a public fountain pours Lithia water, naturally fizzy and famously strong. Take one sip for the story. Most people make a face. Some come back for a second.
Afternoon: warm water and slow hands
Ashland is a town that takes rest seriously. Pick one and book ahead:
Chozu Bath & Tea Gardens, 832 A St. Japanese-inspired gardens with private pools you reserve by the hour, a communal hot pool, steam, sauna and a cold plunge, then tea at the bar. Closed Mondays; check hours before you go.
Waterstone Spa, 236 E. Main St. Downtown, at the Ashland Springs Hotel. Massage, facials, Ayurvedic treatments, steam and sauna. Good for a couple, and good for anyone who wants to be looked after for an hour.
Jackson WellSprings. About two and a half miles north of town: a large pool fed by naturally warm, alkaline mineral springs, plus sauna, steam and yoga in the temple. Some evening sessions are adults only, so check the schedule before you go.
Evening: what's on this season
The last bows at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The 2026 season closes in late October. Come From Away plays through October 24 and A Midsummer Night's Dream through October 25. If you can catch one, do. See OSF for tickets.
The Festival of Light. On the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 27 this year), Ashland turns on the holidays. The Plaza fills with music and local vendors in the afternoon, Santa parades in around 5 pm, and more than a million lights come on across downtown. The lights stay up through the season, and last year brought caroling weekends on the Plaza into late December. Check Travel Ashland for this year's schedule.
Snow on the mountain. Mt. Ashland opens when the snow allows, often around the holidays. A morning of turns and an afternoon of warm water is about as good as a winter day gets.
Dinner. Pick up a deli dinner and something for tomorrow's breakfast at the Ashland Food Co-op, or end with a pot of tea at Dobra Tea. On a Tuesday in season, the Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market runs in the morning; it moves indoors for a winter market in December, so check dates.
The perfect stop between Oregon and California
Driving south from Portland or Seattle toward Sacramento, the Bay Area or Los Angeles? Ashland sits right on I-5, about where the drive starts to wear on you. Spend the day here, then cross Siskiyou Summit and drop into Scott Valley for the night. Blossom Sanctuary is about 68 miles from Ashland, roughly an hour and a quarter.
The whole cottage is yours: three bedrooms, a wood stove, a kitchen set for a dinner party, terraced gardens for morning stretching and a sky full of stars. EV charging is included, so you leave full. In the morning you are about four and a half hours from Sacramento and around five and a half from the Bay Area, through Yreka and south on I-5, rested instead of wrung out.
Heading north instead? Flip it. Stay with us first, then take Ashland as your slow day before the long run to Portland. Either way, it is the best investment you can make in the trip: arriving as yourself.
Good to know
Etna to Ashland is about 68 miles, 1 hour 15 to 20 minutes, through Yreka and north on I-5 over Siskiyou Summit (4,310 feet, the highest point on I-5).
In winter the summit can require chains or traction tires. Check TripCheck and Caltrans QuickMap before you go.
Book spa time and yoga ahead, especially on weekends and around the Festival of Light.
Oregon has no sales tax, but Ashland adds 5% to prepared food, including restaurant meals.
Southbound, the California station at Hornbrook may ask about fruit, plants or firewood.
Drinking? Plan a sober designated driver. It's a mountain drive, and there's no taxi or ride-share in Scott Valley.
Ashland warms you up. Etna lets you land. See open dates and prices for your stay at Blossom Sanctuary, and join the Orbit for letters from the house, with 20% off a first stay booked on our website as your welcome gift.
