When is the Little Feet, Big Discoveries nature walk?
Friday, November 13, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Registration is required, through the Ecology Center's registration page. The Discover Siskiyou listing has the series details.
Where is it and how do you get there from Etna?
The walk meets at the Lakin Dam Picnic Area on the McCloud River, a few miles past the town of McCloud. The listing links a map pin, and you'll get any meeting notes when you register. From Blossom, plan on about an hour and a half.
Go over Gazelle: take Gazelle-Callahan Road from Callahan to Gazelle, then on to McCloud. It's only a touch longer, but you see gorgeous land and Lovers Leap rock, and it's a nice cell-phone-free drive (there's no service), so download your directions before you go. Come home through Yreka on I-5 and Highway 3. With a noon finish, you'll be home long before dark. Check Caltrans QuickMap the morning of, since mid-November can bring snow at elevation.
What should you know before you go?
What happens: a storytime, sensory walks and activities, games and nature journaling, all designed for families to do together and for a range of young ages.
What it's about: the walks explore local ecology, plants and animals, and how they are all connected.
Price: earlier walks in this program have been offered at no cost. Check the registration page to confirm for this one.
What to bring: layers, warm hats and gloves, waterproof shoes, water and snacks. Little ones get cold fast near the river.
Why guided: we encourage guided outings like this one. This time of year, we don't recommend exploring the woods on your own, and a walk led by naturalists is the best way for kids to learn the forest.
