Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. Our suggestion for this weekend: get your vote in on Friday, then spend the rest of the weekend celebrating with your neighbors. Here is the whole plan, day by day.
Friday, October 30: vote, then homecoming
Morning. Start at Sugar Magnolia's Farmstand & Bakery, 306 Callahan Street in Etna, open Friday to Sunday mornings. Go early.
Midday: vote. Drive to Yreka in daylight, about 35 minutes, and turn in your ballot at the Siskiyou County Clerk's Office, 311 Fourth Street, Room 201. The office is open 9:00 AM to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 PM. The secure drop box outside is open around the clock.
Have your mail ballot? Fill it out, put it in the envelope, sign the envelope, and drop it off.
Lost it or never got one? Through Election Day, ballots are available at the Clerk's Office.
Never registered, or moved? You can still register in person and vote the same day through Conditional Voter Registration. Call ahead to (530) 842-8084 to confirm the steps.
Not sure you are registered? Check at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov.
Head home with time to spare. The sun sets around 6, and deer cross the roads after dark.
7:30 PM: homecoming. The Etna Lions host Redding Christian at Etna High School, 400 Howell Avenue, a walk from the house. Bring a warm layer and a blanket for the bleachers. Our homecoming guide has the details.
Saturday, October 31: Halloween in Etna
Morning. Sugar Magnolia's again, or a slow breakfast at the house.
10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, if you like a guided day out. The Halloween Matsutake Experience is a guided mushroom foray in the forests near Mount Shasta, about an hour and fifteen minutes away. Book ahead.
From 11:00 AM. Denny Bar Company pours its Black Bottle Release, a bourbon and a rye, at 511 Main Street. 21 and over for tastings.
5:30 to 6:30 PM. The Etna PAL Trunk or Treat fills Main Street between Diggles Street and Collier Way. Costumes welcome.
Doors at 7:00 PM. Denny Bar Company's free, all ages Halloween party at The Garage on Main Street, with Sundown Poachers at 7:30 and JT and the Ignitors at 9. Walk there, walk home.
Our Halloween in downtown Etna guide has the full lineup.
Sunday, November 1: the extra hour
Clocks fall back at 2:00 AM, so you get an extra hour of sleep. Keep the day slow: a long breakfast, a book by the wood stove, a walk through town. If you still have a ballot at home, this is the day to fill it out.
If you did not vote on Friday
By mail: postmarked on or before Tuesday, November 3. No stamp needed.
Drop box: 311 Fourth Street, Yreka, open 24 hours a day.
Election Day in Etna: Tuesday, November 3, 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM at Scott Valley Berean Church, 134 Church Street. Bring your mail ballot to hand in.
