Where to stay near Rain Rock Casino: a private house in Scott Valley

Rain Rock Casino sits just off Interstate 5 in Yreka, about 26 miles from our door. If a night there is already on your calendar, here is the gentler version of the trip: dinner and a little luck in town, then home over the hill to a whole house in Scott Valley, where the loudest thing at breakfast is the birds.

We're Blossom Sanctuary, a private retreat house on 4.2 acres of gardens just outside Etna. This is the guide we'd give a friend who asked us where to stay near Rain Rock.

Rain Rock at a glance

Rain Rock Casino is run by the Karuk Tribe and opened in 2018. It's just off I-5 at Exit 773 and open every day from 7 am to 3 am. The gaming floor is 21 and over, so bring a photo ID.

  • Games. 349 slots and 8 table games, plus a 5,000-square-foot non-smoking section.

  • Food and drink. Rain Rock Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, the bar pours 12 beers on tap, and Maiyaj Asian Express stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Players Club. Free to join at the Players Club desk.

  • This fall. Laugh Out Loud comedy nights on October 15 and November 19 at 7 pm, a Halloween party on October 31 and a classic rock tribute night on November 14. The events page has the details.

Stay at the casino, or stay in the valley

Rain Rock has its own hotel now, with 72 rooms, a pool, a gym, courtyard fire pits and dog-friendly rooms. If you want to walk from the tables to your bed, book it and have a great night.

If you're coming as a group, or you'd rather wake up somewhere green and quiet, Blossom is the other way to do it. The whole house is yours: three bedrooms for up to six guests, a kitchen set for a dinner party, a wood stove for cold nights and hammocks under the oaks for the morning after. Deer wander across the lawn most evenings. EV charging is included with every stay, and Etna's Main Street is less than five minutes away.

The drive from Etna

Take Highway 3 north through Fort Jones, past hay fields and ranches, then over Forest Mountain into Yreka. It's about 26 miles, roughly 35 minutes. From Yreka, follow the signs to I-5; the casino is just off Exit 773.

Coming home late, watch for deer from dusk on. The casino stays open until 3 am and there is no taxi or ride-share in Scott Valley, so choose a sober, rested driver before the first round.

Make a day of it in Yreka

Yreka grew up in the Gold Rush, and its old center still looks the part. Give yourself an afternoon before the casino.

  • Miner Street. Downtown along West Miner Street is a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. At 322 West Miner Street, the Yreka Bakery baked bread from the 1850s until 1965. Spell its name backwards.

  • Greenhorn Park. Trails around the reservoir, with Mount Shasta views from the Humbug Trail.

  • Lunch. Natalee Thai Cuisine for pad kee mao and a Thai iced tea, or Casa Ramos for a family Mexican lunch.

  • Dinner. Strings Italian Café for cioppino or the tortellini, open daily until 8:30.

  • A glass of wine. The Wine Bar & Bistro pours wine and draft beer with small plates, Wednesday to Friday from 4 pm. Check hours before you go.

Back at the house

The morning after, take it slowly. Coffee by the wood stove, then a walk into Etna for breakfast at Wildwood Coffee and bread from Farmhouse Bakery, open Wednesday to Saturday. On a night you'd rather not drive at all, Denny Bar Co. is a walk from the house, with wood-fired pizza and spirits distilled on Main Street. For the rest of the valley, our one perfect day in Etna and Scott Valley drives guide have the details.
