Hotels sometimes get cheaper at the last minute. A single private house on a holiday weekend does not. Here is how booking early saves you money at Blossom, and why the end of the year matters.
Most travel advice about waiting for a deal comes from big hotels. They have hundreds of rooms to fill, so prices can drop when a night looks slow. Blossom is one house with one calendar. Thanksgiving week, the Christmas holidays, New Year's Eve and the long winter weekends each happen once, and once those dates are taken they are gone. Booking ahead protects the dates you want, and at Blossom it also protects the price.
The honest part about last-minute deals
Last-minute discounts are real for hotels. In Expedia's 2026 Hotel Price Index, people who booked hotels 8 to 14 days out did best, and last-minute hotel bookers paid less on average than people who booked four or more months ahead (Expedia). That study looked at summer hotel stays, not holiday homes.
Whole-house stays work differently. Prices for rental homes follow how many are still open, not how close the date is. Over holidays and in winter mountain towns, prices tend to hold firm right up to check-in, and rural retreats are often booked 60 to 90 days ahead for holiday weekends (AvantStay). If you are waiting for a holiday-week discount on a private house, the more likely outcome is no house at all.
Why joining before December 31 matters at Blossom
At Blossom, members of the Sovereign Circle keep the rate they join at. Joining is free, and the founding rate is only open through December 31, 2026. Here is how it works:
Founding members, joining by December 31, 2026: $555 a night on winter dates (November through February) and $600 a night from March through October, for every stay you book as a member.
Members joining on or after January 1, 2027: $600 a night, every month of the year, winter included.
And the rate keeps stepping up for new members: $619 a night for anyone joining from March 1, 2027, and $638 from November 1, 2027.
Put simply, a winter night costs a founding member $555 and someone who joins in March 2027 $619. Over a three-night winter stay, that difference adds up to more than $100 before tax, and it applies to every stay afterward.
Longer stays cost less
2 nights: 25% off the nightly rate. $783 on winter dates at the founding rate.
3 nights: 27.5% off. $1,090 on winter dates.
4 to 6 nights: 30% to 35% off.
A week: a flat $2,000 on winter dates.
Every price includes cleaning and every fee. The 14% county lodging tax is added and shown before you pay.
The holiday dates that go first
Thanksgiving week: Thursday, November 26, 2026. Our Thanksgiving in Scott Valley guide covers the Turkey Trot and the holiday kickoffs nearby.
Christmas week: movie nights at the Avery Theatre in Etna, Christmas in McCloud and the Yreka Night of Lights are all on our events calendar.
New Year's Eve: Thursday, December 31, with New Year's Day on a Friday, which makes a natural three-night weekend.
Martin Luther King Jr. weekend: January 16 to 18, 2027.
Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day weekend: Valentine's Day falls on Sunday, February 14, 2027, and Presidents' Day is Monday, February 15. It is one of the most requested weekends of the winter.
What early planning gets you besides price
The right length of stay. With more dates open, you can choose three nights or a week instead of squeezing into whatever two nights are left.
Time to plan the details. Our concierge can line up a private chef, suggest a holiday event or two, and help you plan winter driving, all before you pack.
A calmer trip. No one has to refresh a booking page the week before. The house is yours, the plan is set, and the stove is waiting.
Free EV charging, planned in. Charging is free with every stay. Bring your own mobile cable with a dryer-outlet adapter, and see our EV road trips to Etna for the best chargers on the way.

Common questions
Is it cheaper to book a holiday rental early or at the last minute? For a single private house over a holiday, booking early is usually the safer and cheaper choice. Last-minute discounts are more common at large hotels in slow periods. At Blossom, joining the Sovereign Circle before December 31, 2026 locks in founding rates, which never go up for you.
How far ahead should I book a holiday stay in Etna, California? For Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and the long winter weekends, book as soon as you know your dates. Holiday weekends at rural retreats are often booked 60 to 90 days ahead.
What does a winter stay at Blossom cost? At founding rates on winter dates, one night is $555, two nights are $783, three nights are $1,090 and a week is $2,000. Cleaning and every fee are included, and the 14% county lodging tax is shown before you pay.
How many people does the house sleep? Blossom is made for up to four adults or a family of up to six, and the living room couch makes a comfortable extra bed.
