Main Street, slowly: vintage finds and small shops in Etna

Etna's Main Street is a few blocks of old brick and wood storefronts. You can walk it in ten minutes. You should take the whole morning. It's a short walk from the house, so leave the car where it is and bring a tote.

Martin's Experienced Items

If you only have time for one stop, make it Martin's Experienced Items, the best vintage store in town. It has been on Main Street for more than 25 years, and calling it a thrift store sells it short: clothing, furniture, housewares, antiques and true vintage, beautifully organized, with everyday things beside the one-of-a-kind finds. There's a furniture annex for the bigger pieces.

Martin's is open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm. Go early, give yourself longer than you think, and if you're eyeing something big, measure the back of your car before you fall in love with it. Every good find in this town comes with a story, and the people behind the counter usually know it.

A salon in an old bank

At 424 Main St, The Parlour opened this spring after three years of planning and construction turned an old bank building into a salon and spa. It does hair, eyelash extensions and waxing, and takes walk-in haircuts Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. A fresh cut in a former bank is a very Etna kind of souvenir.

Sourdough on Callahan Street

Around the corner at 306 Callahan St, Sugar Magnolia's Farmstand & Bakery opens Friday to Sunday with artisan sourdough, homemade breads, sweet treats and farm-fresh produce. Weekend shelves go fast, so come in the morning and take a loaf home for the week.

Something made down the street

Denny Bar Co. at 511 Main St makes its spirits in small batches right here: Boulder Peak vodka, Laust Sparrow gin, Roosevelt Rye whiskey and limited releases like its Heritage Collection. Take the free distillery tour (Friday to Sunday; call (530) 467-5115 to book), then take a bottle home. It's the rare souvenir that tastes like the place.

More to wander

A Saturday morning on Main Street

  • 9 am. Coffee from Wildwood, then the doors open at Martin's.

  • 10:30 am. Sugar Magnolia's, before the sourdough is gone.

  • 11:30 am. Lunch at Denny Bar Co. (open from 11) or Etna Brewing Co. on Callahan Street.

  • Afternoon. The distillery tour and a bottle for the shelf at home, then walk your finds back to the house and arrange them on the kitchen table like a museum of the morning.

Good to know

  • Martin's is open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm, and closed Sunday to Tuesday.

  • Sugar Magnolia's is open Friday to Sunday; The Parlour takes walk-ins Tuesday to Friday; Citrine Lounge Spa is open Monday to Saturday.

  • Denny Bar Co. is open Wednesday to Sunday and Etna Brewing Co. Thursday to Monday. Small-town hours change with the season, so check before you go.

  • Bring a tote, and cash never hurts in a small town.

Come for a weekend and leave with a story on the passenger seat. See open dates and prices for your stay at Blossom Sanctuary, a short walk from Main Street, and join the Orbit for letters from the house, with a welcome gift for your first stay.
