Take your life back: a private reset and revitalization retreat in Northern California

Some seasons ask everything of you. Maybe you've just walked out of a hard situation: a relationship, a job, a home, a habit that was taking more than it gave. Maybe you're newly sober and want a few clear days somewhere beautiful. Maybe you're simply ready to feel like yourself again. This is a reset and revitalization retreat for taking your life back, at a private house in the mountains of Northern California, and it's worth the trip from anywhere in the country.

There are no rules here. No program, no schedule, no one asking you to explain yourself. Just a beautiful, quiet house in Etna, California, soft light through old oaks, a wood stove, and days that belong entirely to you. Men, women, LGBTQ+ guests, solo travelers and small circles of friends are all welcome, and all of it is designed to feel generous, private and loving.

Who it's for

  • Fresh starts. You're recently out of a difficult situation and want room to breathe, rest and reset.

  • Sobriety. You're choosing a clear head and want slow mornings, long walks and early nights that help it stick.

  • Nature. You want old oaks, deer at dusk, mountain air and a sky full of stars.

  • Solitude. You want to hear your own thoughts again.

  • Deeper friendships. You want to bring the people you trust and have the conversations that never happen over a quick dinner.

  • Sovereignty. You want to make every choice yourself, from when you wake to what you eat to whether you talk at all.

A private house that's yours

Blossom Sanctuary is a whole house, not a room in a lodge. There are no strangers down the hall, no shared spaces and no front desk. You come and go as you like. The concierge is a text away if you need anything and quiet if you don't.

Come alone, or bring a few people you trust. The house sleeps up to four adults or a family of up to six, and the couch makes a comfortable extra bed.

Inside there's a California King under vaulted ceilings, a second bedroom with a Queen bed and a writing desk, a full bed in the loft, a wood stove and a deep couch made for long talks. Outside there's a garden, a grove of old oaks on 4.2 acres, deer at dusk and a sky that fills with stars.

Intentions for taking your life back

An intention is a direction, not a test. You don't have to explain where you've been to set one. Write it on the first evening, keep it close, and revisit it on the last night. Some to choose from:

  • Rest. I don't have to be strong right now.

  • Clarity. I'm choosing a clear head, one day at a time.

  • Safety. For these days, I can let my guard down a little.

  • Boundaries. I can say no, and I can change my mind.

  • Connection. I'll let the people I trust a little closer.

  • Solitude. I'll spend time with my own thoughts, and be kind to them.

  • Reclaiming. I'm taking back something that's mine: a morning, a place, a feeling, my life.

If you came with friends, you don't have to share yours.

A gentle rhythm, if you want one

Use this as a shape, not a schedule. Choose what you want.

Arrive in daylight. Walk the house and the garden first so you know the space. Light the stove. Make tea. That can be the whole first evening.

Mornings. Try a quiet one: no phone until you choose to look. Sit under the oaks with a blanket, or stay in bed and watch the light move. Grounding can be simple: feel your feet on the floor, name five things you can see, breathe out longer than you breathe in.

Movement. Gentle stretching with the house's yoga mats, or a slow walk around the garden or into Etna. Go only as far as feels good.

Afternoons. Write, read, nap, or do nothing at all. If you journal, two prompts to start: What am I ready to leave behind? What do I want my life to feel like now?

Evenings. A simple dinner, the stove and the stars. If you came with friends, this is when the long talks happen. Prefer to be cooked for? A private chef can be arranged for an added fee.

If you're staying sober

Plan the days the way you want them to feel. Stock the kitchen with drinks you love, like sparkling water, good tea and fresh juice, and let evenings center on dinner, the fire and the sky. Bring the numbers of the people who support you. Meetings near Etna and online are listed below.

Optional care in town and nearby

All of these are choices, never part of the plan unless you want them.

  • Touch is optional. If massage or bodywork feels right, say ahead of time what's okay, what isn't, and that you may want to stop. A good practitioner will welcome that. Facials and Reiki are available at Citrine Lounge Spa in Etna.

  • Sauna. Mountain Healing Spa on Main Street in Etna has the closest sauna to the house. The Parlour, a few doors down on Main Street, is another wellness spot worth exploring while you're in town.

  • Water and warmth. Chozu Bath & Tea Gardens in Ashland, about an hour and 20 minutes away, has a sauna, steam, hot pools and a cold plunge. Go in daylight and check Caltrans QuickMap before you drive.

  • Yoga with a teacher. Kaitlin of Kreate Yoga has offered private yoga and sound healing at the house, on your terms. Schedule and confirm directly with her, and reach out early: her calendar fills fast.

Free national support lines

If you're working with a therapist, counselor or sponsor, it can help to talk with them before you come about what you'd like from these days. Hard moments can happen in quiet places. If one does, it doesn't mean the retreat failed. Step outside, put your feet on the ground, call someone you trust.

Coming from a major city

Many guests come from far away on purpose. Distance helps: a few hours of road or a short flight puts real space between you and everything you're stepping back from. Here's how to get to Etna from across the US.

  • Fly into Medford (MFR). Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport is about an hour and a half from the house, and its nonstop flights from western hubs make it a one-stop trip from most major US cities, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Boston, Miami and Washington, D.C. Read our guide to flying to Blossom for airports and car rentals.

  • San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and the Bay Area. About 5.5 to 6 hours by car, mostly on I-5 north, or a short flight to Medford.

  • Sacramento. About 4 hours north on I-5, then Highway 3 at Yreka.

  • Portland. About 6 to 6.5 hours south on I-5, or a quick flight to Medford.

  • Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Fly to Medford, nonstop or with one connection, then drive about an hour and a half.

  • Redding and Ashland. About 2.25 hours and 1.5 hours by car.

From November through spring, drive the mountain stretch in daylight, travel together if you can, and check Caltrans QuickMap before you go. Free EV charging comes with every stay.
