Two couples, one house: a winter getaway for four

Two couples, or four close friends, one house to yourselves for three winter days, and a fair way to split it all.

It's a little after three on a Friday in December. The first car is in, someone has the wood stove going, and the groceries are spread across the kitchen counter waiting for the second car. By the time everyone arrives, the round wooden table by the stove is set for four, the kettle is on, and the last light is going gold behind the oaks. Nobody is checking in at a desk. Nobody is asking who sleeps where. The house is simply yours for the weekend.

That's the idea behind a two-couple trip here. Whoever your four are, two couples, old roommates, siblings and their partners or a standing Friendsgiving crew, Blossom Sanctuary works as one shared home for a few days. See what's on around Etna on our events calendar while you pick dates, and read on for how the rooms, the cooking and the costs tend to work out.

Who sleeps where

The house is made for up to four adults, and it's laid out so two couples each get a real bedroom with a door that closes.

  • The main bedroom has a California King under vaulted ceilings.

  • The second bedroom has a queen bed, plus a writing desk, yoga mats and kettlebells.

  • The loft has a full bed, reached by a ladder.

  • The cream sectional in the living room makes a comfortable extra bed.

For two couples, the simple answer is one pair in the California King and the other in the queen. Flip a coin, or let whoever drove farther choose. If you're four friends sleeping solo, everyone gets a bed of their own: the two bedrooms, the loft and the couch. Blackout curtains in every bedroom mean the early risers and the late sleepers don't have to negotiate.

There's one large bathroom, so a little morning planning helps. Stagger showers, or let the early risers go first while the coffee brews.

Cooking together

The kitchen is set for a dinner party, which is the whole point of a trip like this. A few ways we've seen groups share it:

  • One dinner per pair. Each couple takes a night and the other does the dishes. Night three is leftovers and whatever's in the fridge.

  • Friendsgiving. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year. One pair takes the main dish, the other takes the sides and pie, and everyone eats at the round table by the stove for as long as the conversation lasts.

  • Breakfast is free for all. Stock the basics, and whoever is up first makes coffee for the house.

Bring the shopping with you, or split it into two lists so each pair picks up half on the way.

Splitting the cost

Money is the quiet way group trips go sideways. One clear total, agreed before anyone books, makes it easy.

Low season runs November through February. At founding rates for Sovereign Circle members, three nights is $1,090, with cleaning and every fee included, and the 14% county lodging tax is shown before you pay. All in, that's $1,242.60 for three nights: about $621 per couple, or about $311 each, which works out to about $104 a person per night. Joining the Circle is free through December 31, 2026.

  • One person books, and everyone else pays them back the same day.

  • Keep groceries in a shared note, and settle up on the last morning.

  • For four friends, agree ahead of time whether the person on the couch pays a little less, or take turns.

Privacy, plainly

You book the whole house, so there are no other guests, no front desk and no shared walls. The concierge is a text away at 530 572 1122 if you need anything, and otherwise leaves you be. Outside there are about 4.2 acres of terraced gardens and old oaks, with a walled garden and deer on the lawn, so anyone who needs an hour alone can find one. Everyone is welcome here, and the whole place is yours.

Three days of ideas

Day one: arrive and walk to town. Check-in is at 3 PM. Drop the bags, light the stove, then take the short walk to Main Street in Etna. Denny Bar Company and Etna Brewing Company are both on Discover Siskiyou's list of things to do in Scott Valley. Winter hours change, so check before you go. Then home for the first dinner. Our one day in Etna guide has more for a slow afternoon.

Day two: a drive and the ice rink. The Siskiyou Ice Rink at Shastice Park in Mount Shasta runs November 14 to February 21, with skate rentals and views of the mountain. It can close for weather, so call (530) 926-1715 first, and find session times on the MSRec calendar. If you'd rather stay closer, our Scott Valley drives post has easy loops around the valley. Either way, drive in daylight, stay together and check Caltrans QuickMap before you go.

Day three: movie night at the Avery. The Avery Memorial Theatre, Etna's historic theater, has three community film nights this season: Moana on Saturday, November 21, Home Alone on Saturday, December 19, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (PG-13) on Sunday, December 20. Doors open at 4:30 PM and the film starts at 5:00. Tickets are $10 for adults, and concessions include beer and wine for those 21 and over. A December 18 to 21 stay catches both holiday films. Afterward, walk home and finish the night by the stove.

On Thanksgiving week, add the 21st Scott Valley Schools' Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, 9 to 11 AM, a 3-mile walk or run before the cooking starts. The listing doesn't give the start location yet, so check it before the day.
