Blossom Sanctuary sits on 4.2 acres in Etna, at the top of California. It is also a good place to start a coast trip on very little money. This guide gives you ten places to sleep near the ocean between the Lost Coast and Santa Barbara, what each one really costs this winter, how to get there from Etna and back, and how to keep the drive safe in the short days of fall and winter.
Every fee, closure and road note below was checked on November 5, 2026 against California State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, Caltrans and the counties. Fees change, so confirm when you book.
Before you go: the winter rule
From November to March, don't explore these routes alone. Go with a companion or a guide, drive in daylight only, and check Caltrans QuickMap and the campground the morning you leave. Winter sunset on the coast comes around 5 pm, and long stretches have no cell service. Spring through fall is the easiest season for a first solo trip.

What about Big Sur?
Highway 1 through Big Sur is open again, with one-way traffic control in a few places through the end of the year. The Forest Service has closed Plaskett Creek campground, Nacimiento-Fergusson Road and the ridge roads after the Timber and Plaskett fires, under an order that runs through January 31, 2027, so there is no cheap legal place to sleep there this winter. Drive it in daylight between San Simeon and Monterey, and sleep at Washburn or San Simeon Creek.
Gas: where to fill up
Fuel will be your biggest cost. On November 4, AAA put the California average at $5.87 a gallon. Redding was the cheapest area on these routes at about $5.67, and San Luis Obispo County among the highest at about $6.06. Fill up in Redding on the way out and back, start every coast day with a full tank, and plan around the long empty stretches on the Lost Coast and in Big Sur.
A van that gets 18 miles per gallon uses about 87 gallons on a 1,560-mile loop from Etna to Usal, Bodega, San Simeon and Montaña de Oro and back. That is roughly $510 in gas at today's prices, more than the four campsites combined.
Ways to spend less
- Borrow a free day-use pass. Many California public libraries lend a free California State Library Parks Pass that covers vehicle day-use at state parks. It does not cover camping fees.
- Golden Bear Pass. If you receive CalWORKs or SSI, or you are 62 or older with a qualifying income, the free Golden Bear Pass gives free vehicle day-use at many state parks for the calendar year.
- Half-price camping with a disability. The lifetime Disabled Discount Pass costs $3.50 and takes 50% off family camping and day-use at state parks. California veterans who qualify can get the free Distinguished Veteran Pass.
- Cook every meal. A camp stove and a grocery stop in Redding, Eureka or Arcata, or San Luis Obispo will save more than any campsite choice. Set your daily grocery budget in the trip builder above.
- Free federal land, with a free permit. Dispersed camping on national forest land is usually free for up to 14 days. You need a free California Campfire Permit to use a stove, and fire restrictions can ban flames entirely.
- Book the cheap sites first. State park sites open on ReserveCalifornia six months ahead at 8 am Pacific. Midweek winter nights are the easiest to get.
Coming from the other direction
Every route works in reverse. From San Francisco, Bodega Dunes is the closest stop at about 79 miles. From Los Angeles, Carpinteria State Beach is about 85 miles up US-101. Work your way along the coast, then head inland to finish with a quiet night at Blossom. Flying in instead? Price flights to Medford (MFR) on Google Flights; the airport is about 1.5 hours from Etna.
